Club~Supporting~Young~Artists

Hi

Wed Jan 2, 2008, 4:39 PM
Welcome to all the new members we have had recently! It is a great end to '07 and start to '08.
Unfortunately I may not be around as much as I would like, as this year I will be starting my study at College (Cert IIII in Hairdressing) and I also have a job in a small takeaway restaurant. Hopefully you will all have a great year, as I am sure I will!

We love looking out for new members, so don't forget to let others know about the club. During the times that I am gone, I am hoping that the staff ([link])
will update the club while I am not around!

We are hoping for another contest soon, so if people would like to put in their votes now for what theme they want it based on? If you look back through the older entries of the journal, there are also some other theme suggestions from last year that you can vote on.

Love,
MJ

For the up-coming contest I vote for an emotion concept. It's something that we did in my studio art class.

The management would take ONE object, something simple. (In the class we used a tomatillo, a kind of fruit.) And then you can present a list of emotions or feelings to choose from and we have to take that object and portray it with that emotion.

I had "isolation" in the studio art class and so took the tomatillo and made it reeeeeeally tiny and put it in the middle of a huge blank white space. (I think I still have it up in my gallery.)

It's just a thought. It gets people thinking about how to present certain concepts.

No problem! It was always one of my favorite art exercises... makes you think about how to present an idea.

Yeah, I can see that. Do you think art classes helped you, or was it just the practice?

I think that the art classes helped in learning how to present your ideas. It introduces people to things, exposes them. Like many other people may not have thought of learning how to use guache, charcoal, chalk pastels, and the various types of paints. I think art classes are good at exposing you to different media and helping you learn the best ways to present the idea that you want. Learning not to keep everything in the center of the page and all. When you master that, you really open doors to the imagination of presentation.

As for actual artistic skill, the execution takes all practice. Learning how to draw will never be as good in a class as it is just by doing it over and over and over again. Classes, I'd say, are only really good in getting you to think about HOW you want to do a picture... but not exactly WHAT it is you want to do. They suck in that respect.

No problem! I'm delighted to be a part of it! I'm glad I can help inexperienced artists gain experience. I hate that art classes are so expensive and tutorials are so trite online. They teach you how to draw like elementary school book fair how-to books do. They're all like "copy me!" when it's not at all how you should begin to learn about art. So having had art classes, and paid for them, I plan on passing on that knowledge for free to people who can't afford it otherwise. XD
